24 years old English singer-songwriter James Bay realeased "Hold Back The River" in the UK on 17 November 2014 as his second single from his debut studio album Chaos And The Calm (2015). The song was composed by both Bay and the Ivor Novello award winner Ian Archer.

According to Bay. the song was created purely out of emotion as well as a longing to be with his friends and family after he was involved in a exhausting tour. Initially, he thought that he would have time to spend with them after the gruelling tour has ended. However, he was proved wrong when he found himself to be busier than ever with his early successful career in the music industry.

"I spend 8-10 hours of the day chasing it,... and giving up, trying again and giving up, but because I felt it so strongly, suddenly at the last moment, just before hanging the guitar back up, the music came. The riff was the first to come. It felt like the thing that expressed the emotion the best, and the lyrics just kind of just flowed to that melody." -James Bay

Besides, he started to become worried and anxious that he would have lost contact with his loved ones. The only way for the British singer to express his feelings was always through music. Hence, armed with the overwhelming feelings and his guitar, he spend hours to write the song.
