Canadian singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes has released "Mercy" on 18 August 2016. Co-writtten by Mendes, Ilsey Juber, Danny Parker and Teddy Geiger, "Mercy" is the second single from his second studio album, "Illuminate" (2016). The music video of the song was released on 21 September 2016 directed by Jay Martin, featuring Mendes singing in two different scenes, one with him drowning in a locked car in the sea while the other showing him performing the song with instruments.

On 3 December 2016, Mendes performed "Mercy" on Saturday Night Live and tweeted, "Never been so emotionally consumed in a song in my life. Thank you @nbcsnl. Thank you guys for getting me here."
